Back when I was in Munich, one of the local experts I spoke with was musing about how enviable Copenhagen bicycle network is; but, he closed his comments by saying, “but there are no street trees” in Copenhagen. I was very curious to fact-check this claim once I arrive. And after spending some time exploring the city, I can see how someone from Munich, a city with numerous tree-lined boulevards, could be surprised by the sparse tree canopy. There is a lot being asked of Copenhagen streets in terms of serving the traffic demands from people on foot, bikes, transit and in cars, not to mention the needs of adjacent businesses. Finding enough space for mature trees and other greenery on city streets has proven quite a challenge.
